![]() Although, according to Gallup,ġ0% turnover is healthy, but every industry and every organization is different. After all, the employee turnover rate is a sum total of a lot of different factors. There is no specific good or bad turnover rate. If you’re wondering what an ideal turnover rate is, then you’ll be surprised to know that there is no such magic number. But after obtaining the percentage of the employee turnover rate in your organization, the next crucial step is to analyze whether the turnover rate is healthy or not. You must have observed the methods to calculate the employee turnover rate well by now. So, whenever you calculate one turnover rate for the whole organization, do consider these factors. Turnover rates fluctuate with variables such as region, industry, and occupation. Since the yearly turnover rate provides a figure obtained over a longer period, and hence, reflects a significant pattern or data. This implies that your employee turnover rate for the month of December is 6.67%Īlthough the monthly employee turnover rate helps to analyze certain short-term changes, organizations usually prefer calculating the turnover rate annually. The turnover rate in your organization for the month of December 2022 will beĮmployee Turnover Rate for December = 8/120*100 But, in the same month, 8 employees decide to leave. Suppose, in the month of December 2022, your organization has an average of 120 employees. So, here is the formula to calculate the monthly employee turnover rate. ![]() The monthly calculation of the employee turnover rate helps to analyze and study the patterns that any new organizational change has brought about. The above formula is the one that is widely used to calculate the turnover rate yearly.īut, if you want to research patterns during the year, like spikes during significant quarters or changes after implementing new policies, then calculating the turnover rate frequently helps. This implies that for the year 2022-23, the employee turnover rate is 13.33% By 31st March 2023, the number of employees in your organization has grown to 90.īut over the course of the year, 10 employees left the company, then the employee turnover rate currently stands atĮmployee Turnover Rate = 10 / (60+90)/2 * 100 Suppose, on 1st April 2022, your organization had 60 employees. In order to obtain the percentage, the formula then multiplies the number by 100. So, basically the formula divides the number of employees who left the company by the average number of employees over a specific time period. Now, in order to calculate the average number of employees in the given year, all you’ve to do is: Y= Employees at the beginning of the year X= Total number of employees who left the organization in the given year Here is the formula for Yearly Employee Turnover Rateīasically, you’ll need three variables. How did such a seemingly unremarkable brand ignite such national passion?įirst, says Robert Mackalski, assistant professor of marketing at McGill University, there’s its ubiquity. In order to really understand the downfall of Tim Hortons, you need to look at why it became so popular in the first place. The making (and unmaking) of a Canadian brand While it may have been a one-off by an inordinately upset punter, the episode seemed to encapsulate the, well, shitshow, that is the Tim Hortons brand at the moment. The incident was all caught on camera and the video was widely circulated online. Last month, a woman defecated on the floor of a Tim Hortons and threw her feces at the cashier because she was angry he had denied her access to the bathroom. While this is partly due to increased competition from the likes of McDonald’s and millennials opting for more artisanal food and drink options (there’s certainly nothing artisanal about the processed cheese sandwiches at Timmies), it was also, said Schwartz, largely attributable to “negative media created by group of franchisees”.Īnd then there was the poop incident. In an April earnings call, Daniel Schwartz, the CEO of RBI, told investors that Tim Hortons same-store sales (an important retail metric that tracks sales at locations that have been open for a year or more) had fallen for the eighth consecutive quarter. Not only has the very public rowing between the Tim Hortons parent company, franchisees and employees hurt the brand’s reputation, it has hurt sales. What makes Tim Hortons Canadian? Is it the fact that the coffee is quite bland? Chris Lloyd Employees were vocally unimpressed by this – as was the premier of Ontario, who called the benefit reductions a “clear act of bullying”. These franchisees notably included Jeri-Lynn Horton-Joyce (Tim Horton’s daughter) and her husband Ron Joyce Jr (the son of Ron Joyce, co-founder of the chain) the couple made national news after axing benefits, a move they blamed on “the lack of assistance and financial help from our head office and from the government”. At first, RBI refused to let Tim Hortons franchisees pass on the costs by raising prices so some store owners cut paid breaks and benefits. ![]() ‘The company has cultivated Canadiana through its marketing.’ Photograph: Roberto Machado Noa/LightRocket via Getty ImagesĪnother contributing factor, Scholz notes, is the rancor between franchisees and employees, sparked by Ontario significantly raising its minimum wage earlier this year. Many store owners have been unhappy about what they see as self-serving measures by the parent company to increase its margins as the franchisees’ expense. What mattered is that since RBI took over, Tim Hortons has been perceived to be acting in a way that seems antithetical to Canadian values. ![]() Indeed, Timmies was owned by the American company Wendy’s for years, before regaining independence and restructuring as a Canadian public company in 2009. RBI is majority-owned by the Brazilian investment company 3G Capital but the fact that Tim Hortons was no longer properly Canadian needn’t have been a problem. Sholz attributes much of this dip to a longstanding, and increasingly acrimonious, row between Tim Hortons franchisees and the relatively new parent company, Restaurant Brands International (RBI), which was formed in 2014 when Burger King merged with the coffee chain. “We’ve been doing this study for 20 years and they’ve been at the top 10 every year, except for once when they were number 13,” Dave Scholz, the executive vice-president of Leger, told the Guardian. This was announced only a few weeks after Tim Hortons dropped from number four to 50 in an annual survey of corporate reputation by research firm Leger. In May, for example, the company fell from 13th place to 67th place in a study tracking Canada’s most reputable companies. But while the popular purveyor of caffeinated patriotism may have burrowed its way into the national psyche, there are signs that it is beginning to lose its hold on Canadian hearts not a week seems to go by without a new negative headline about Tim Hortons. ![]() ![]() The game also features some 2D side scrolling (a must now in every Wii game) ‘transition’ levels that serve as the link between the different areas of the Wasteland. Most areas are convoluted messes that are nearly impossible to memorize (almost as if you were a mouse in a maze.) Furthermore, the level design, while artistically gorgeous (more on that below), is - from a gameplay point of view - horrendous. You leave the area and then come back only to find that all your changes have been reset, and if you decide to take a short-cut and use thinner, well that counts against your ‘good’ rating. Also, let’s say you just spent 40 minutes exploring an area using only paint in hopes of getting the ‘good’ ending. For example, the paint/thinner mechanic, while a novel way of affecting story decisions, can often feel like a ‘paint by numbers’ situation, with only certain things in the environment that can actually interact with Mickey’s brush. The question is, will you even want to?īecause, you see, for everything that Disney Epic Mickey does right, it seems to do something else completely wrong. It’s an interesting mechanic that isn’t seen much outside of grand RPGs, and one that makes you want to try different things when replaying the game. ![]() If you decide to paint in and ‘fix’ the Wasteland, its inhabitants will take a liking to you, but if you go around erasing everything they will shun you. ![]() Paint and thinner also play into the way the story plays out. If Mickey sprays an enemy with paint that enemy will eventually befriend him, while spraying one with thinner will erase him from the Wasteland. These artsy liquids also have a use in combat. With paint Mickey can fill in the cracks in bridges or create platforms to help him advance, or even repair damaged scenery, while thinner will remove objects and clear a path for Mickey. Wielding Yen Sid’s magic brush, Mickey can either spray the world with paint or thinner. All pretty standard fare for a game in this genre, in fact it’s the choices you make that help give Disney Epic Mickey a unique feel. Along the way you will solve puzzles, battle enemies, meet and help some long forgotten friends and collect Disney memorabilia (a lot cheaper here than at Disney Land). You control Mickey Mouse (did you think it would be anyone else?) as he makes his way through the Wasteland, attempting to undo the damage done by the Shadow Blot. As the months pass he forgets all about Yen Sid’s workshop and the monster he created, until one faithful day when the Blot returns to take Mickey to the Wasteland, where he soon realises that he is the one who caused all the troubles that have befallen the home of the forgotten and that only he can make things right and defeat the Shadow Blot.Īt its core, Disney Epic Mickey is your standard 3D platformer/action-adventure, in the same vein as Rare classics Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64. Terrified, Mickey runs back to his house. After the wizard retires for the evening the mischievous mouse does what he does best and causes all sorts of trouble, using Yen Sid’s magic paintbrush to create the Shadow Blot. Our tale begins with Mickey Mouse wandering through a (conveniently placed) magic mirror into the wizard Yen Sid’s (that’s Disney spelled backwards for all you anagram fans out there) work shop, where the man of magic is working on his latest creation, a world for all the forgotten Disney characters. However, the question remains, does Disney Epic Mickey do justice to this mighty mouse and his impressive resume or should this ‘epic’ be banished to the Wasteland? So what does Mickey have that would make him so epic? Well, he’s a classic (I’m talking Great Depression-era classic) character, is one of the most recognizable cartoon characters in the world and has left a great legacy that only Mario can rival. In fact, the past two months have seen not one but two titles branding themselves as ‘epic’ - Kirby’s Epic Yarn and now Disney Epic Mickey. The word ‘epic’ sure has seen resurgence as of late.
